The Department issued and trained all members with Taser electronic control weapons in order to reduce injuries to officers and citizens. The use of Tasers provides our police officers with less than lethal tactics and devices that may be employed when necessary to fulfill their lawful duties. The Taser is a less than lethal weapon that may be used to gain control of a potentially violent person when less forceful methods would be ineffective or unsafe. It uses electrical current to disrupt voluntary control of muscles.
The Department replaced the outdated existing police desk/ radio console with new technology that integrates inter-operable emergency service radio systems, internal intercoms, video monitors and the building’s security system. With the threat of terrorism and other man-made and natural disasters it is paramount for emergency services to be able to communicate seamlessly. Also, security of public facilities such as Village Hall and the Police Department (shared facility) requires constant monitoring and the ability to lock down without delay. A new radio console and improvements to the Police Desk area allows the police department to provide services that greatly enhance the safety of the public, police officers and the other emergency service personnel when they are most at risk.
The Department began using electronic ticket writers provided by a vendor who administers the parking violations for the village. The electronic ticket writers by parking enforcement officers have reduced human error, increased productivity and the identification of scofflaws.
The Tuckahoe Police Department was a recipient of the prestigious Automobile Association of America’s Gold Award for superior programs and projects that address local traffic safety. This is the sixth consecutive year that the Department was recognized with one of the highest awards by the AAA. The award was given for the Police Department’s effectiveness in addressing local traffic safety issues, which was statistically demonstrated by participation in programs such as:
These programs, among other efforts resulted in no DWI related fatal or serious injury accident, no serious bicycle accidents, no serious school bus accidents and a high compliance rate of occupant protection for the past 9 years. Another commendation was received for 35 consecutive years without a pedestrian fatality.
Sergeant Stephen Klika retired after serving the department faithfully for over twenty years.
The Officer Recognition Award is to recognize patrol officers for their outstanding work at their positions. Officers are chosen for professional dedication, consistent performance at an exceptional level, accomplishments of note-worthy deeds, extraordinary performance of duty, leadership, community participation, and continued learning. The picture and name of the recipient is prominently displayed in Village Hall. The recipient for the year 2009:
