Football season in our community is in full swing. I have discovered that football garners the largest crowds in connection to High School sports but I am happy to be part of a community that has not let sporting overshadow the importance of education. Now I realize my position in the government of Tuckahoe has no formal connection at school functions; but I still try and find some time to pop in.
Recently Mayor Mary Marvin and I spoke about the exciting Bronxville vs. Tuckahoe football game, which we both viewed from the sidelines. This year Mayor Marvin has an even greater personal interest in the Bronxville team since her son, Bradford, is the Bronco’s quarterback. Unfortunately for the Tuckahoe community, the Tigers were defeated. As the Mayor of Tuckahoe I am in the unique position of having two school districts serve the constituents of our village. In addition to the Tuckahoe Tigers, some residents’ children are members of the Eastchester Eagles who have had a stellar year and attained a perfect 7-0 season. However, the Eagles never play Bronxville or Tuckahoe, since they are in different division. That being the case, the only "Mets vs. Yankees" or "Jets vs. Giants" type rivalry within our town is the annual Tuckahoe vs. Bronxville game. Tuckahoe coach John D’Arco has expressed an interest in perhaps one year moving this game under the lights of the new town recreation facility, Haindl Field, thereby creating our town’s own version of "Friday Night Lights". As to the feasibility of such a plan, I cannot say, but it certainly sounds like a good idea. Regardless of how things of that nature work out, after Mayor Marvin and I spoke we agreed to add a little something to the festivities of next year’s annual rivalry. I have been thinking that perhaps a wager of some sort might be in order.
I recall from my days residing in New York City that whenever one of the sports franchises entered a championship series the Mayor would place a wager with the opposing city’s Mayor. I remember Ed Koch betting a pastrami sandwich from Katz’s Deli against somebody. Rudy Giuliani wagered the Mayor of Arlington, Texas if the Yankees lost to the Rangers, he would send over Nathan’s hot dogs and tickets to a Broadway show and the Metropolitan Opera. If Rudy won, he got an authentic 10-gallon cowboy hat. Each Mayor chose something that highlighted the uniqueness of their community.
I spoke to a few residents to aid me in my search of something that is representative of Tuckahoe, but I realized that each vision was different, revolving around people’s personal favorite things. I decided to look at the Village places I frequent and tried to find the perfect stake for this wager. I quickly realized how difficult it would be to choose. While I find it Tuckahoe unique to sit in Mario’s Barber Shop having Ritchie cut my hair and chat, I just couldn’t see Mayor Marvin enjoying it. Instead I turned my attention to our food establishments. I regularly breakfast at First Stop Café, Main Street Café and Nick’s Corner Deli which by the way, is no longer on a corner, but I couldn’t choose breakfast at one without aggravating the others. I contemplated sending the Marvin family a Tuckahoe pizza but the thought of confessing my favorite just gave me a headache. Since each resident of the Village may have a different favorite pizza, I’ll refrain from confessing mine. With all the wonderful eateries in our Village it would be impossible for me to pick one without alienating others. It is, however, much easier for me to be candid about Bronxville’s establishments. I enjoy Lange’s tuna salad, the bagels of Park Place, some sushi from Haiku and the occasional pint from Fogarty’s.
I was close to giving up the search and resigning myself to getting some kind of a little Mayor’s cup that the winner could display, when I was reminded that Mayor Giuliani had once wagered he would wear the hat of the opposing team in public if the Yankees lost. This seemed fitting enough, so my proposition is if the Tuckahoe Tigers lose next year I would wear a Bronxville Bronco’s hat during our next public meeting. I am not requiring that Mayor Marvin wear the Tuckahoe Tiger hat if the Broncos lose, it is only fair to have her anguish over what she is willing to wager, but the option is hers.
However this plays out, I look forward to hearing from Mayor Marvin. Regarding the Eastchester Eagles, rest assured if they enter a championship game with any municipality I will definitely call to lay out my proposal with the opposition’s Mayor. In the meantime my best wishes this football season to all the players and good luck to all three teams.
