The New York State Sex Offender Registration Act Information
The New York State Sex Offender Registration Act, also referred to as Megan’s Law established a Sex Offender Registry within the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services. The law took effect on January 21, 1996 and the text of the law is contained in (Correction Law Article 6-C, section 168 et seq).
The Sex Offender Registration Act was enacted to assist local law enforcement agencies to protect communities by:
- Requiring sex offenders to register with the State; and,
- Providing information to the public about certain sex offenders living in their communities.
